Press Release

Neuroscience Center Taking Shape

FOX CITIES, WI—(May 23, 2007) The Neuroscience Group of NE Wisconsin and Miron Construction Co., Inc. announce groundbreaking for The Neuroscience Center. Located in the
Town of Menasha, with easy access to major highways, the Neuroscience Center will provide comprehensive diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation services for people with brain, spine and nervous system diseases. The 38,920 square-foot building is scheduled for completion in January 2008.

The Neuroscience Center will be a community-oriented, physician-directed, clinically integrated, health care center focused on neuroscience services, the only center providing comprehensive neurological and neurosurgical services. Areas of expertise include: conservative and surgical care of back pain, neck pain and other conditions of the spine, brain tumors, stroke and cerebrovascular disease, Alzheimer’s and memory disorders, chronic pain, comprehensive headache care, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, and peripheral neuropathy.

The Neuroscience Group and Miron are determined to create a unique neuroscience health care experience that links “ideal patient experience” behaviors with facility design. The group is developing a facility that will encompass the differentiation, relevance and uniqueness needed to provide ideal patient experiences. The Neuroscience Group and Miron Construction
cultures of continuous attention to customer needs led to the integration of the ATTACH 21 research and leadership from Steve Tyink, founder of ATTACH. Tyink, Plunkett Raysich Architects, and Miron health care team leader Jim Hans continue to work side-by-side with the Neuroscience Group physicians and staff to simultaneously link mission, vision, and values with facility design and process improvement.

The ATTACH 21 research system was used to assess customer and employee attachment levels. Gap analysis brought the data into action and overall patient care experiences and opportunities for growth were identified. The goal of fusing the design process and ideal patient expectations is to set the standard for comprehensive, compassionate neuroscience care.

Steven Price, MD, president of the Neuroscience Group of NE Wisconsin, noted, “We are intent on utilizing the Neuroscience Center to provide all the ambulatory services needed to care for our patients.  While our clinic setting has worked well for our doctors, the people we care for come to our group of specialists with serious health care needs.  Our goal is to meet those needs in the most effective, caring manner possible.  The Neuroscience Center will help us to do that in a convenient, more comforting environment.”

Steve Tyink, ATTACH, commented, “We use many tools, including the Rapid Access Prototype (RAP) process to actually map out how care might be best delivered in the new facility. We identified over 300 discrete patient touch points and what patients expected at each of these interactions. We used this information to model care-giving services as well as facility design. In my experience, this is the first time that facility design and patient care outcomes have been systematically reviewed and integrated into the design process.”

For over 15 years, the Neuroscience Group of NE Wisconsin has been setting the standard for comprehensive, compassionate brain, spine and pain care in NE Wisconsin. Established in 1991 by neurosurgeon, Thomas Lyons, MD FAC, this multi-specialty practice is developing the Neuroscience Center to be a regional referral center, staffed by board-certified neurologists and neurosurgeons. In addition to specialty training, these physicians have completed an advanced fellowship or Ph.D., which allows them to provide the most advanced medical techniques and technology available in northeastern Wisconsin. The group has grown from two physicians in 1991 to seventeen providers, including neurosurgeons: Dr. Thomas Lyons, Dr. Philip Yazbak, Dr. Randy Johnson, Dr. Sumon Bhattacharjee; neurologists: Dr. Susan Hibbs, Dr. Lisa Kokontis, Dr. Gizell Larson, Dr. Thomas Mattio, Dr. Steven Price; Associate practitioners: Diane Vanderlin, APNP, Jill Hietpas, PA-C, Christine Munson, APNP, Cathy West, APNP, Karla Sagorac, APNP, Penny Bernards, APNP, and Laura Tucker, APNP and Kimberly Karrman, PT. Rod Lefler, DC will be joining the Neuroscience Group in July to provide chiropractic expertise for non-surgical pain patients.

Margie Weiss, CEO/Community Health Advocate for the Neuroscience Group noted, “For the past fifteen years, our physicians and associate practitioners have been providing a wide spectrum of neurological and neurosurgical services throughout NE Wisconsin. The Neuroscience Center will serve as a magnet for attracting additional neuroscience expertise to the “New North.” The Neuroscience Group of NE Wisconsin providers will continue to set the standard in this area for comprehensive, compassionate brain, spine and pain care by continuing to be customer-centric. We are excited to share the resources of the Neuroscience Center with our community.”
