Neuroscience Practitioner Recognized for Leadership

NEENAH, WI—(April 17, 2006). Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Cathy West, was the recipient of the Neuroscience Group Leadership Award on 4/15/06. West was honored for her leadership in promoting neuroscience education for physicians, nurses and other health care staff. For the past 11 years, Cathy has helped to coordinate the Neuroscience Conference, with attendance raging between 100 and 300 registered nurses, physical therapists and other providers for a full-day continuing education event. Twice a month, she helps to organize a continuing Medical Education (CME) activity focused on neuroscience updates for physicians, nurse practitioners, physicians assistants and chiropractors. Most recently, West organized a 2-day certification review for neurology nurses. Participants from as far as Ohio attended the 2-day educational event. For the past 4 years, West has helped to organize "Stroke Rounds", a weekly case review process for people hospitalized for a stroke. West has also been active in community presentations on stroke prevention and early detection.

West is certified as an acute care nurse practitioner. She earned a Bachelors in Nursing Science from Marquette University in 1986 and a Masters in Nursing Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2005. West joined the Neuroscience Group in 1998 as a clinical nurse specialist, working with the neurologists to care for the health care needs of patients hospitalized with nervous system disorders and disease. West has a special interest in helping families understand how to cope with neurological illness or injury prior to and after hospital stays.

In presenting the award. Dr. Steven Price, president of the Neuroscience Group of NE Wisconsin commented, "Cathy West has been a proactive force within this health care community, fostering educational programs for physicians, nurse practitioners and nursing staff. She is always available and willing to initiate new learning opportunities for both professional colleagues and community groups. Internal staff education efforts is also one of Cathy’s priorities."

The Neuroscience Group of NE Wisconsin provides a wide spectrum of neurological and neurosurgical services throughout NE Wisconsin. These services include care for patients with serious health care concerns like epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, headaches, multiple sclerosis, peripheral nerve diseases as well as surgical procedures for spine, brain and peripheral nervous system disorders.
