About Neuroscience Group

Neuroscience Group, established in 1991 by neurosurgeon Thomas A. Lyons MD, FACS, is a multi-specialty practice focused on the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of the nervous system: brain, spine, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves.

Neuroscience Group has brought a sustained neurological presence to the Fox Cities providing critical care for trauma patients, hospitalist care, and advanced therapy for brain tumor and spine surgery patients. Neuroscience Group physicians were integral to developing and certifing the ThedaCare Stroke Center and currently work with both local hospital systems to treat stroke and other neurological issues.

The group has been located at different facilities throughout the Fox Valley but now calls their main Neenah campus home. For convenience sake, providers also see neurological patients at satellite clinics throughout the region. Neuroscience Group has grown to nineteen physicians, twelve associate professionals and eight physical therapists, as well as over a hundred support staff, nurses and technicians.

Twenty-five years later the goal is still the same…to deliver the most advanced treatment options and the most compassionate care to our patients and their families.

Learn about the history of the Neuroscience Group.

1991: the treatment of patients with complex neurological and spinal conditions in Northeastern Wisconsin often required transfer to Madison, Milwaukee or Mayo Clinic. That changed dramatically when Thomas A. Lyons, MD, together with Steven J. Price, MD, founded the Neuroscience Group. It was Dr. Lyons’ vision to bring together neurosurgery, neurology and reconstructive spine surgery within one physician group.

The group’s original offices were located at Appleton Medical Center, with a satellite office at Theda Clark Regional Medical Center in Neenah.  Neuroscience Group physicians were instrumental in establishing the Intermediate Neuro Unit at Theda Clark. Their efforts resulted in the installation of MRI services at both ThedaCare hospitals, greatly enhancing the quality of life for people in the Fox Valley region. The neurosurgeons of the group were also critically important in establishing a strong trauma program at Theda Clark.

1999: Neuroscience Group consolidated its operations to the Medical Office Building at Theda Clark Regional Medical Center in Neenah. At that time, there were six physicians in the practice but during its time in Neenah the group expanded with the addition of a fifth neurologist, as well as two more neurosurgeons. Chiropractic services were also added at this time. The neurologists of the Neuroscience Group were instrumental in the development of the Theda Clark Stroke Center, with Dr. Thomas Mattio serving as its medical director. Dr. Lyons, Neuroscience Group founder, retired from full-time neurosurgical practice in 2007.

2008: The group built a free standing clinic at 1305 West American Drive in Neenah. Interventional Pain Management and ancillary services such as MRI and neurodiagnostic electrical studies were added; this drastically changed the operation and helped achieve the goal of becoming a community-oriented, multi-disciplinary health care facility. Neuroscience Group gained the distinction of being the only medical practice north of Milwaukee and Madison offering neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedic spine surgery, chiropractic, interventional pain management, and physical therapy in one comprehensive facility.

2011: Neuroscience Group rebranded to help communicate its mission to the community and represent all specialty offerings.  The new paprika logo highlighted two key areas of expertise, brain and spine. The tagline, “Excellence in brain, spine and pain care” emphasized all areas of the practice.

2014: Neuroscience Group and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers announced a naming rights agreement for Fox Cities Stadium. The home of the Midwest League affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers would now be known as Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The physicians of the Neuroscience Group believe the stadium and their sponsorship of the field contributes to the quality of life in the Fox Cities, a high priority for the group.
